Grid design. I absolutely love it. It is the core foundation of usability. It helps in reading, information structuring and aids the brain break a large visual into small little digestible pieces. Good grid design, if done well, needs almost no creative design support. The content becomes the hero.

Good grid designs challenges the web designer to think minimalist. That is not meant to say that his or her work is lesser. On the contrary, it means the designer’s work must be more meaningful. Details become apparent. Refine. It takes a strong designer to make good grid designs better without adding clutter.

I’ve been looking at lots of grid designs lately. Without shame I’ll admit that this site is based on one of the grid designs featured below. Albeit we’ve taken it slightly apart and added tweaks to it to make it personal to ourselves.
